The Chhhatyls are an
humanoid race adorned with some plant attributes, like photosynthesis by their skin. The
reaction gives them the glucose and a small part of oxygen (but not enough to survive
underwater). Chhhatyls revere
Chhoani, the Great Gardener who created the
Universe, and his daughter Silene who gave the
seeds of life. So gardening is a revered activity, and warriors make the best gardeners.
They fear Koudriss, the god of chaos. Males wear their hair very long (see images on left), adorned with merit decorations or achievement insignia. The more braids, the more elevated their social prestige. Warriors sport the longest hair. The abondance and length of hair causes
endless quarrels among male adolescents. Inversely, females wear their hair short, and
their merit badges are pinned on their tunic. Biologically, they have a fragile abdomen
(letting the light through to the foetus) that must be protected by a shell, so very few
take part in physically-challenging sports. Kite flying is a popular female sport. Music
and architecture are largely dominated by females. (Chaaassister Mirlenn is a well
known compositor). |
They fear and despise the humans, calling
them primates or Zzoms (an insult since zzoms are local monkeys).
Chhhatyls like playing a strategy game called
gomshak. The matches can take a very long time,
so many hot-tempered adolescents like Chaaas make a bad move and lose the match against
older, and more patient, Chhhatyls.
excerpt from
the manga The General's Garden.
The worlds:
Ch'lokan is the world Chaaas was raised by his parents, Lor Fulli and Lar Chlaan. It is, by Chh'tyl standards, a semi-desertic world. The luxurious vegetation is on a thin belt at the Equator.
Talmur, Nasser et Chaaldar ("The first") are the three main cities on this world. The northern territories are uninhabitated, too cold. Ch'lokan has one small mooon, Paru.

Sioulann:
is a fast-spinning planet, so the ocean bulges on the equator, leaving the poles emerged.
As the axis in very inclined, the planet seems to roll on its orbite. Its year
is so short that the dayear is 32 krels (a time
unit, about 1.7 hours) long, two times the circadian optimum of Chhhatyls. (This leads to
a spiral path of the sun in the north hemisphere sky). So the Sioulann settlers learned to
fit a long siesta in the middle of the dayear. The Wind of Tammerlan timeline
is expressed in dayears.
